Visiting a church can be a frightening thing

Maybe you are returning to church, or coming to church for the very first time. You may feel like people are watching you or maybe that people will judge you. "Will the preacher condemn me from the stage?"  "Will people judge me if I look differently than they do?"

A few tips to help you when you visit FBC:

-Feel free to come casual or dressy. We have no dress code, whatever makes you comfortable is great with us.
-Sit anywhere you like, there are no assigned seats.
-Beware of friendly people - someone WILL speak to you.
-Your kids are safe and they'll have fun. Our leaders for Kidz Quest and TruNorth Teens are well-trained to provide the best possible care for your kids.
-We are not after your money! Guests are encouraged to enjoy the visit with NO obligation to give.

First Baptist Galax is not a perfect church, but we strive to make it a "perfect place for imperfect people."

Next Steps

If you are interested in "kicking the tires" and seeing what First Baptist Galax is all about you can attend the First Steps class that is offered on a rotating basis a few times each year.  The class meets immediately after church where you will be served lunch, and is a great time to ask questions and get to know what First Baptist Galax is all about.

Feel free to contact Pastor Sam sbartlett@fbcgalax.org or call the church 276-236-5185 about attending the next session if you are interested.

Church Membership

The membership of First Baptist Galax is composed of persons who have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and who have publicly shared their witness of this through baptism, and who presently seek to order their lives in accordance with His teachings.  Members are accepted by transfer of letter from another Christian church or by statement of faith and believer's baptism.  A person may be accepted by majority vote of the membership present after his or her name has been presented.

Should you desire to become a member of First Baptist Galax, we recommend that you contact Pastor Sam Bartlett sbartlett@fbcgalax.org prior to making that commitment.

Baptism

Interested in sharing what God has done?

We are excited that you are interested in baptism. We believe that baptism is an important step of obedience for every person who has accepted Christ as his or her Savior.

This page has been designed to explain baptism and the necessary steps to be baptized at an upcoming service. This page should contain all the information you'll need, but if you have further questions, feel free to contact us sbartlett@fbcgalax.org

Who Should Be Baptized

The blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Salvation occurs when a person places their faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus as the payment for their sin. If you have done that, then you are ready to be baptized. Just like a bride and groom show others their love for one another by wearing wedding bands, your baptism is your opportunity to show others that you have accepted Jesus as Lord of your life and are now walking with Him.

If you have any questions about how to begin a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, please contact us.

What Baptism Symbolizes

Baptism is a way of showing others that you have entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ. It symbolizes what took place in your heart at the time of salvation:
* Accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
* Shared in His death and resurrection, illustrated by going under the water (dead to your old life), then rising again (new life).
* Were symbolically washed clean, and sins were forgiven by His death on the cross.

The Baptism Process

The baptism process at First Baptist Galax has been designed to be both simple and meaningful. Each step has been carefully planned with you in mind.  It begins with you contacting Pastor Sam in person, through the church office, by email or over the phone.  Pastor Sam will then meet with you to discuss the significance of your step of faith through baptism and set up a time for you to video record your personal testimony.

What to bring to your baptism

We will provide you with a white robe to wear over your clothing.  You will need to bring a towel, a change of clothes, and possibly a hair dryer and personal necessities.

Making Your Video

One of the most powerful aspects of baptism at First Baptist Galax is the video testimony shown right before your baptism. The video allows you to share how Christ has been working in your life. Prerecording allows you to do as many takes as necessary, while sharing the message you have thoughtfully and prayerfully prepared ahead of time. Many people ask, "Do I have to do the video?" The answer is "Yes"!  Baptism is meant to be a public profession and it is an incredible opportunity to share God's message of redemption with others. We have witnessed the life changing effect these videos have had on people's lives.

Another important reason we do a video is that we as a congregation grow in our faith by watching these stories. It allows friends, family, and even those you don't know to celebrate the amazing transformation God has worked in your life.

Some people are nervous about taping their stories, but we work hard to make the process both simple and fulfilling. We want baptism to be a meaningful and enjoyable experience, and we look forward to walking through it with you! If you have any questions or need help preparing your testimony, please contact us.

First Baptist Galax is a missional church.  Our goal is simply stated in Matthew 28:19, to bring people into a relationship with Jesus that is strong and vibrant.

First Baptist Church was founded on April 30, 1905, at an organizational meeting in Galax, where the church was established with the assistance of Baptists in Fries, Pulaski, and Wytheville. Twenty charter members made up the original church’s membership as the Galax Baptist Church, but no other written records of church activity and administration exist until January 5, 1907, when the Rev. W.J. Banks was recorded as pastor of the church. The first mention of a church building comes from the minutes of a meeting on April 2, 1907, which states that “the most important subject before the conference was to complete the church at once.” This building, located on Block 17, lot 2 of Oldtown Street, still stands today and is now occupied by the Mountain View Friends Church.

The church grew in numbers over the next few decades, organizing groups like the Woman’s Missionary Society, the Girl’s Auxiliary, the Sunbeams, and the Baptist Young People’s Union. In 1923, the church employed its first full-time pastor, Rev. A.G. McGee, and built a new church building on Main Street on property donated by Mr. E.B. Lenox in 1928, which bore a plaque naming the congregation as “First Baptist Church.”

First Baptist Church has, from its inception, been evangelistic and mission-oriented in nature. Continued increase in attendance compelled the church to build an educational building, and the congregation formed a mission on the south end of Galax in 1947, which became the Hillcrest Baptist Church. In addition, the church also assisted in the development and constitution of the Calvary Baptist Church in Galax and held worship services in the brickyard section of the city, which would eventually lead to the formation of the East Galax Baptist Church.

Under the pastoral guidance of Rev. James C. Pickens, the current church building was constructed, with dedication services being held on May 16, 1971. During the next couple of decades, First Baptist continued to engage in missions and outreach, including trips to Southern India and the Outer Banks, the formation of the Baptist Free Medical Clinic in 1992, which functioned under a group of volunteer physicians and other workers as a non-profit “clinic without walls” that accepted patients who qualified as to need, and the founding of a Hispanic church mission in 2001, which remains under the pastoral care of Rev. Ricardo Alvarado.

With Rev. Sam Bartlett serving as our current pastor, First Baptist Church continues to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in carrying out His mission and spreading the good news for the Galax community and the world.

Statement of Faith

We affirm the Holy Bible as the inspired word of God, and that His Son and our Lord and Savior Jesus is the standard by which the Bible is to be interpreted.  We voluntarily unite together as a body of baptized believers in Jesus Christ, certain of the Christian hope that those who place their trust and obedience in our Lord Jesus Christ will reign with Him for ever and ever, and are committed to sharing this good news of salvation with lost humanity.

Vision, Mission, & Values
