MINISTRIES : Women's Ministries : Women's Missionary Union (WMU)

The Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) has long been an important ministry that First Baptist has offered to the community and world. Formed in the 1920’s out of the congregation’s Ladies Aid Society, which had originally collected money for Foreign Missions, the WMU has been an instrumental body in spreading the Good News through service, and teaching our children about Jesus Christ and the Great Commission that was entrusted to his Father’s church.

Today, the WMU exists as an auxiliary of the church and the Southern Baptist Convention, continuing to serve as “laborers together in prayer, in giving not only of our means, but of our time, in educating our young people, work in our town or village, laborers together to tell the WORLD about JESUS.”

The group, which meets on the second Tuesday of every month in individual groups with a sack lunch, is involved with mission projects as they arise. They provide for the youth groups that meet on Wednesday nights, help finance mission trips, provide a clothes closet for the needy, collect items for the Hostel of the Good Shepherd (Galax), and collect food for the local food bank, Rooftop of Virginia.
